Set at the edge of the vast Thar Desert, the imperial city of Jodhpur is the second largest city of Rajasthan. Once the capital of the Mewar State, this city was founded in 1459 by Rao Jodha – the chief of the Rathore clan of Rajputs.

Also known as the Sun City, the city of Jodhpur is divided in to two parts – the old city and the new city. The old city is separated by a 10 km long wall surrounding it. Also it has eight Gates leading out of it. The new city is outside the walled city.

Jodhpur is one of the most popular tourist destinations in India. Blessed with scenic landscapes, Jodhpur city has many beautiful palaces and forts such as Mehrangarh Fort, Jaswant Thada, Umaid Bhavan Palace and Rai ka Bag Palace. Other charms of Jodhpur include Government museum and its beautiful Umaid garden. The city is known as the "Sun City" because of its bright and sunny weather throughout the year.

Umaid Bhavan Palace : Built by Maharaja Umaid Singh, Umaid Bhavan Palace is one of the most imposing palaces in India. This palace was actually built for the welfare of the people. This palace is a fine example of Indo-Saracenic architecture. This palace was converted in to a heritage in 1977.

Meharangarh Fort : This fort is the most magnificient fort in the whole Rajasthan. Popular tourist place in India, this fort was founded by Rao Jodha in 1459. One has to cross seven gates to reach the fort. Inside the palace, there are several palaces which are also worth seeing. Moti Palace or the Pearl Palace is main attraction of the fort. The fort also has temples, garden and a huge courtyard. The fort is living proof of the hard work and the skill of the Jodhpuri sculptors.

Jaswant Thada : Situated to the left of the massive Meharangarh Fort, Jaswant Thada is a 19th century royal cenotaph. It was built in the memory of Maharaja Jaswant Singh II. It is an example of architectural brilliance in India.

Apart from these sights there also many others sights in Jodhpur which are worth seeing; such as, the Government Museum, Rai Ka Bagh, Mandore Garden, Nehru Park, Temples etc.
